FAQ

You might be wondering

These answers refer to the development version. Release-environment checks are still pending.

How do I start or edit an entry?

On Home, tap Bowel, Mood, Log meal or Log episode to start. Open a saved entry from its history or detail view to edit it. If saving fails, your input stays so you can retry.

Do I need to register? What is the device ID on the Me tab?

No sign-up or sign-in is needed. The app creates an 8-digit device ID and a default avatar that only distinguish the on-device profile; they are not a server account. Membership uses your Apple Account and is unrelated to the device ID.

Where is my data stored?

Health records, your avatar and settings stay only on your phone. They are never uploaded to the developer and are excluded from iCloud and computer backups. Nearby toilets searches go to Apple Maps, and Apple handles membership purchases. See the Privacy Policy.

What happens to records and membership on a new phone?

Records do not move automatically, so export your original records on the old phone first. On the new phone, use Restore purchases with the same Apple Account. Restoring brings back membership, not records.

How do I export my records?

Go to Me → Privacy & consent → Export my original records to export JSON or CSV for free, then save to Files or share. Files contain health information, so share them only with people you trust. Monthly PDF reports are a member feature; generated reports stay viewable.

Which features require membership, and what does it cost?

Basic records, 7-day reviews, food observations, data export and the tools are free. Mind & gut practices, 30/90-day and custom reviews and monthly PDF reports require membership. On the China mainland App Store: ¥12/month or ¥98/year, and eligible new monthly subscribers pay ¥8 for the first month. Apple's purchase sheet shows the final price. This website takes no payments.

How do I restore purchases?

Go to Me → Membership benefits → Restore purchases using the Apple Account you bought with. This restores membership, not records.

How do I manage or cancel a subscription?

Go to Me → Membership benefits → Manage Apple subscriptions, or iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Gut Journal. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Deleting the app or clearing records does not cancel a subscription.

How do I request a refund?

Apple handles refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com by choosing the purchase; Apple decides the outcome. Never send us your Apple password or payment card details.

How do I delete records or clear all data?

Delete a single entry from its detail view; it is removed from the on-device database. To clear everything, go to Me → Privacy & consent → Delete all on-device records. The device ID is regenerated, the avatar resets, and this cannot be undone. Delete exported files and cancel subscriptions separately.

Do I need to close an account? How do I remove my avatar?

There is no server account to close. To remove your avatar, go to Me → Change avatar → Use default avatar and save; the original photo in your library is untouched. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on the device.

Can I find toilets without location access?

Yes. Without location access you can type a place to use as the search center, and you can turn location back on in iPhone Settings at any time. Turning location off does not delete saved places.

What if Nearby toilets results are inaccurate?

Results come from Apple Maps. Names, facilities and opening status may be incomplete or out of date, so check on site. Try another search center or keyword, and feel free to email us the details (no location history needed).

Can the app diagnose or treat conditions?

No. Gut Journal is for everyday journaling and self-observation and does not replace professional diagnosis, treatment or medical advice. Trends and food observations only describe your own records; things occurring together are not proof of cause. Seek medical care for severe or persistent symptoms.
